Szentendre

Szentendre primarily captivates visitors with its art and culture.
Szentendre is located at the gateway to the Danube Bend, where the Visegrád Mountains meet the Szentendre branch of the Danube, opposite Szentendre Island, in a beautiful natural setting. It is easily accessible from Budapest by car, by the H5 suburban railway (HÉV), and by bus and pleasure boat services. It is a popular excursion destination.
Until the 1870s, the town was small, with a population barely reaching 4,000. Today, the residential area of the former town comprises only two districts, Belváros (Downtown) and Szamárhegy, although the latter only became a residential area at the beginning of the 20th century. These two districts are separated from all other areas of Szentendre by Main Road 11, which runs along their border.
Over the centuries, several smaller settlements joined Szentendre, which are now various districts of Szentendre with traditional names, such as Izbég and Derecske. Most of the areas that previously belonged to Szentendre’s agricultural lands are now built-up urban areas, such as Pannóniatelep, Püspökmajor, Pismány, and Szarvashegy. The large-scale, single-step incorporation of these areas into the inner city at the end of the 1970s multiplied the residential area, and by the beginning of the 21st century, most of these had been built up, thus the population of the former small town reached 25,000 by 2010. The expansion of the residential zone practically put an end to the traditional fruit growing and gardening in Szentendre.
