Leányfalu Local and Literary History Exhibition Space

Zsigmond Móricz, a prominent figure in the literary life of the early 20th century, associated with the Nyugat literary journal and also serving as its editor, purchased a plot of land in Leányfalu in 1912 at the urging of Kálmán Rózsahegyi, and built a house in this Danube-side settlement. Initially, the writer moved here for the summers, then from 1936, he lived here with his family until his death.

At the beginning of the century, many artists and prominent citizens from Pest moved from the bustling city to this picturesque settlement. Several artists from the Opera House, including Kálmán Alszeghy, Miklós Feleki, Aranka Hettyey, Gusztáv Kőrösmezey, and Miklós Radnai, also purchased properties in Leányfalu.

The grand villas were nationalized in the years following 1948, but the settlement continued to be home to many distinguished personalities during the socialist era. Tibor Déry, Ferenc Karinthy, Pál Gyulai, and Sándor Márai lived here for years, and István Bibó also worked for many years in his house in Leányfalu.

The museum’s permanent exhibition, titled WHOSE VOICE IS IT?, commemorates Zsigmond Móricz and presents the writer’s life and work through five thematic points. The exhibition is suitable for a traditional museum tour, but also allows for free movement and independent exploration within the space by choosing your own route. The central area of the exhibition features a large interactive board, displaying the five thematic points with richer content and interactive tasks.
